I’m A Fashion Editor Who Loves Fall: Here’s My Top 5 Ways To Style A Black Dress Next Season
You don’t need me to tell you, there are countless ways to style a black dress. Little black dresses and stiletto pumps for date night are a classic of course. Wool midi dresses and boots for days at the office are a sleek and dependable staple. And what about mixing colorways with your shoes and accessories to spice up a casual black maxi dress? The list goes on and that seemingly endless style potential starts to feel overwhelming. So, whether you’re wondering how to style a long black dress for an event or want to earn maximum style points at a dinner this fall, I’ve got you covered. Keep scrolling for my 5 top tips that have never failed me yet!
My Never-Fail, Top 3 Ways To Style A Black Dress
1. Add A Belt
Fall is fast approaching and, as much as I love the sunshine, I can’t wait to start wearing cute black dresses again. They’re chic, flattering, and endlessly versatile, and I can honestly say I don’t think I’ll ever love an item of clothing more. Lucky for me, and for those of you who feel the same, dresses like the ribbed wool midi dress by Givenchy exist. No need to find the perfect belt for this one either – it has one of its own. Firstly, I love this because it makes a one-and-done outfit look like carefully chosen separates. Secondly, it highlights the waistline of the dress for an always flattering shape. With the dress sorted, you’ll need the perfect bag and shoes of course. I recommend the Vitello glove slingback pumps by Gianvitto Rossi and the Chanel Matelasse shoulder bag by Fwrd Renew.
2. Opt For All Black Accessories
True, a black dress means you can mix things up with bag and shoe colors. But, a black dress, black shoes, a black bag, and not forgetting black sunglasses? It hits every. single. time. So, when you want to feel your most confident and unquestionably stylish, this look has your back and works for every dress code. Look effortlessly chic in a floaty black maxi dress, sandals, and sunglasses while running errands. Or, go for a fitted midi, loafers, and a black leather tote for dressier RSVP’s.
3. Wear Your Hair Up With Plunge Necklines
You’ll never convince me otherwise. Dresses with a plunging neckline deserve a sleek, minimal up-do to let them shine. For example, The Amber dress by Helsa. A slicked-back bun with minimal accessories will give this dress all the attention it deserves. Hint: the satin mules by Dolce & Gabbana are just the vibe you’re looking for.

4. Add Tights And Pointy Heels To An LBD
With cooler weather comes one of my favorite things – a return to indoor dining. I love grabbing lunch by the water as much as the next person, but there’s something about dressing up and sitting in a beautifully lit restaurant that feels so special every time! With that in mind, I’m thinking about how to style a LBD for maximum style points this fall. Make an already pretty black mini dress, preferably The Cindy Dress by Helsa, even chicer with sheer black tights and pointy black heels. Lastly, add the Oxalis slingback pumps by Saint Laurent and the Voyou embossed leather shoulder bag by Givenchy. You’ll feel flawless.
5. Choose Boots Instead Of Heels
Finally, heels are, generally, the go-to for a night out. However, when fall rolls around, I always opt for a black midi dress and a great pair of designer black boots instead. Preferably with a pointed toe, they add a layer of sophistication to your look. They’ll also keep your feet warm as winter approaches and are so much comfier for walking or, let’s be honest, dancing. The Arris fringed maxi dress by AJE and LVR exclusive 85mm Condora Napa boots by Christian Louboutin are the perfect example. So, finish off the look with the Nobile croc-effect clutch by Tom Ford and expect compliments – lots of them.
